While listening to Mike Stud, who’s making his way to the Union Green on Oct. 25, he doesn’t feel real. His lyricism feels like it’s been manufactured straight off of a pop-hit assembly line for the tween generation, fantasizing about the future of college life.

Get Ready is the second studio album by rock band Rare Earth, released in 1969. The album version of Get Ready was often played in full at college gatherings. It was a percursor to the 12 inch dance singles.

LYRICS:

I’m in the dark, I’d like to read his mind
But I’m frightened of the things I might find
Oh, there must be something he’s thinking of
To tear him away
When I tell him that I’m falling in love
Why does he say

Hush, hush, keep it down now, voices carry
Hush, hush, keep it down now, voices carry

I try so hard not to get upset
Because I know all the trouble I’ll get
Oh, he tells me tears are something to hide
And something to fear
And I try so hard to keep it inside
So no one can hear

Hush, hush, keep it down now, voices carry
Hush, hush, keep it down now, voices carry
Hush, hush, keep it down now, voices carry

Oh, he wants me, but only part of the time
He wants me if he can keep me in line

Hush, hush, keep it down now, voices carry
Hush, hush, keep it down now, voices carry
Oh, hush, hush, shut up now, voices carry
Oh, hush, hush, keep it down now, voices carry
Oh, hush hush, darling, she might overhear
Oh no, voices carry

He said shut up
He said shut up
Oh God, can’t you keep it down, voices carry

Oh, voices carry
I wish he would let me talk

The last three hip-hop albums I’ve listened to were Drake’s Nothing Was the Same, ASAP Rocky’s Long.Live.ASAP and Kanye West’s Yeezus, all of which were released this year, on the drive back up from Basslights in Miami. The last album before that?

Probably The Slim Shady LP back in ‘99. When my sister was playing “Gin & Juice” on the car radio (she always had shotgun when we were kids), I used my headphones and CD player to listen to Hybrid Theory or The Sickness. During my adolescence, I was busy discovering AC/DC and Daft Punk, and regrettably it resulted in relatively low exposure to hip-hop. But on that same drive up this weekend, my girlfriend and her roommate, both much more knowledgeable than I am in terms of hip-hop, agreed on one thing:

“Everyone should try to be Biggie or Tupac. They won’t, but that should be the goal.”
Now while I may not know much, I am vaguely familiar with The Notorius B.I.G.— “Juicy” isn’t just incredible for its immaculate lyrics, flow, or numbingly chill melody.

Like Ray Charles in “You Don’t Know Me,” singing about his inability to connect to
others from the guilt over his brother’s death, to Eric Clapton singing about the loss of his son in “Tears in Heaven,” a track like “Juicy” is a classic because it speaks truth; it feels genuine. Unlike Justin Bieber or Miley Cyrus, Biggie is in fact “OG,” and he brings the experience of his life into his rapping. When you listen to Biggie, he sounds real.

While listening to Mike Stud, who’s making his way to the Union Green on Oct. 25, he doesn’t feel real. His lyricism feels like it’s been manufactured straight off of a pop-hit assembly line for the tween generation, fantasizing about the future of college life.

“My credit card’s at the bar and I don’t know where my phone’s at/Yeah, alright, we be getting’ reckless, drunk textin’, up late, f**k breakfast,” read the lyrics to his track “I’m Not Sorry.” Other tracks like “Kids” or “Feels Good Right Here” talk about the childlike ideal of never growing or driving down the highway with your friends. It feels like kid-safe rap, appropriate for all ages and all set to be on the next Kids’ Bop.

When Eminem sang about cutting lose in “Slim Shady,” it was a call for social anarchy and slap in the face to those who wanted to censor him and his music. Unfortunately, Mike Stud feels like what all those mothers raging against Marshall Mathers wanted us to be listening to, with a few f**ks and references to his penis thrown in. To be edgy.

Whether it’s an online dating site, a blind setup through Facebook or Twitter, or finding matches on Tinder, the Internet has forever changed the definition of what it means to “put yourself out there.” There used to be a time when a prospective couple had to actually- gulp- meet in person and actually talk to each other, but not anymore. More was left up to chance, and the situation was much more out of our control than it is now.

For instance, there’s no delete buttons in real life, and if you put your foot in your mouth, there’s no pretending you made a typo. You can’t see what face you’re making and, if you really go old-school, you can’t see what the person looks like beforehand.

My little hypothesis is that since we’re so used to easily manipulating and controlling online relationships with just a simple click or keystroke, somehow we get it into our heads that real flesh-and-blood people should be the same way, which may be one of the reasons why the divorce rate is on the rise. The sad truth is that most of us do spend more time on our devices than we do with other people, and it’s interesting to note that increased Internet usage is often associated with loneliness. The more forever alone we feel, the more grateful we are for the companionship of technology.

Unlike people, our devices will (usually) do whatever we want, be there when we need them and never require compromise.

But a group of FSU students who are calling themselves #Face2Face2014 believe it’s time to bring back the face-to-face part of relationships. One of the students, a Tinder user who wishes to remain anonymous, feels the change needs to happen in order for soul mate-seekers to achieve their dreams. “I believe it is super important to have face to face interaction because a huge determinant of love and successful relationships is chemistry! How do you know if you’re attracted to someone’s pheromones if you never spend time with them in person?”

The group believes it’s best to combine the two, but limit the online a bit more. “The key is to maintain in person/physical relationships and use technology as a complement to these relationships rather than a substitute,” she says. The goal of #Face2Face2014 is to inspire students to buck up and meet their Tinder matches in person in the hopes of getting to know each other better and being able to walk away with a better feel for who you’re considering a relationship with. Seeing as statistics can often be reversed, it’s possible that if you see a real smile instead of just a pixelated one, you won’t be lonely as much.

Attention all Classic Car Enthusiasts: Now the weather is starting to get warmer and the daylight hours are lasting longer into the evening it’s time to delve into those dusty garages and retrieve your vintage vehicles.  The Independent website has reported that “there is something about classic cars that is intrinsically more interesting than a new one”, and each car is unique with an understated gracefulness – “moving with the charm of a grand old dame rather than the loitering teenager”.

Such gracious traditional cars generally come out when the weather is nice enough to show them off in their full glory. There is no point investing all that money in a vintage car just to expose it to bad weather conditions that will rust the beauty away – keeping it tucked away in a garage over the winter means it will be ready for action in the summer.

Apparently a Portuguese car owner took ‘keeping it tucked away’ to a whole new level, when 180 cars were found in a warehouse in Lisbon, Portugal. According to CarCarCompany.com, “the owner of the cars was a car dealer in the 1970’s and 1980’s and decided to save the more interesting cars that came through his doors”- but apparently forgot about them, so that’s where they stayed gathering dust for over 15 years!

It has been reported that the long-forgotten warehouse revealed a stunning collection of European classics, including rare models of Jaguar, Porsche, Alfa Romeo, Lotus, Mercedes and Austin Minis, which appear to be in a salvageable condition – the exterior might need a brush up but I bet the interior is flawless and untouched by the dirt.

This overlooked dusty warehouse, containing many classic gems, sounds like the perfect opportunity for American Dirty Car Artist Scott Wade to show off his artistic skill of transforming dirt covered cars into fascinating pieces of art, achieving what dirtycarart.com describes as “amazing detailed shaded drawings”- but for us classic enthusiasts we want to know what the future holds for these rescued wonders.

Imagine moving into an empty farm house that has been vacant for over 15 years only to stumble upon a barn welded shut that quite frankly looked like an eyesore – only to find it was bursting with classic cars.

The saying goes ‘curiosity killed the cat’, but in this case curiosity revealed a rare collection of vintage vehicles, which according to CuriousType.com, are valued at just over $ 35 million – maybe curiosity isn’t such a bad thing?
