Sometime over the summer, my parents decided to see what hotels were available for Parents’ Weekend this semester and were dismayed to find out that every hotel in Tallahassee had been booked since April. After the initial disappointment, I waved it off and told them not to worry about it. I was an upperclassman, I thought, Parents’ Weekend is a freshmen thing anyway.

Or is it?

Most upperclassmen probably scoff at the notion of having their parents come and visit. After all, our parents have already seen the campus multiple times, and they’ve likely done Parents’ Weekend before, so why bother with it again when it’s just going to be the same-old, same-old? My parents have seen football games, Tallahassee and the circus, and visiting me would have not only required them to take off work, but to pay a pricy hotel bill (if they were even lucky enough to find one).

Or at least that’s what they think, until Parents’ Weekend is actually here. I’d be lying if I said I didn’t feel a tinge of envy when I walked around campus and saw other students running to their families, hugging and catching up. Even though it tends to be a bigger deal for freshmen, this time of year has become a Florida State tradition, though like most Seminole traditions, it’s an expensive one. Still, it’s always a little sad for those of us who miss out.

It’s interesting to see the differences in the way parents react to repeated weekend visits. Some make a point to go every single year (which could be more than just four times, depending on how many kids are enrolled and how many of them go to grad school) and stay the whole weekend. Others decide once is enough, and that after their student has finished the first year and has fully adjusted to college life, there’s no need for another visit. Probably the best solution would be to just come at another point in the year when campus isn’t so crazy and crowded. Parents’ Weekend certainly isn’t the only time FSU has a home game and a circus performance.

If nothing else, the silver lining in this is that having fewer families attend Parents’ Weekend will make the union a lot less chaotic, and there’s a slight chance Publix may actually still have food on the shelves by the end of Sunday night.
